Dissertation Review: What Is It, Who Provides It, Does It Contain?

Any research project needs not only an assessment by a commission, but also a qualified assessment by a competent expert. When performing term papers, theses and dissertations, the supervisor acts as such a specialist. But to defend a dissertation, it is also necessary to have feedback on the study from official opponents.

The role of a dissertation review

A review is an official document that is formed at the final stage (before the defense of the project, after its full writing and execution) and should represent the opinion of a qualified expert on the work done, its quality and results, advantages and disadvantages. This file contains a qualitative assessment of the study, the most objective information about it, as well as the recommendations of the expert who compiled it.

What is the supervisor's review?

Feedback on the dissertation allows the commission to quickly get acquainted with the scientific work, to determine its "preliminary quality". A well-formed review facilitates the procedure for obtaining a degree. Thanks to an objective assessment of experts, the commission receives first impressions about its quality, main events, etc.

To get a real idea of the work done, to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the applicant and his creations, you need to provide the HAC with at least 5-6 reviews from different people. Among them may be a supervisor, an employee of the department (to which the postgraduate student is attached), official opponents, representatives of the scientific organization (on the basis of which the study was conducted), etc.

Only in exceptional cases can the VAK allow the application of reviews from third-party experts and companies. Moreover, a graduate student or applicant must warn in advance and clarify the procedure for processing and writing reviews: who is authorized for such actions, etc.

Recommendations of experts on writing a dissertation review

Particular attention should be paid to the structure and content of the document. It is important that it reflects:

  • characteristics of the candidate (who he is, what achievements he has made, his participation in scientific, social and other life),

  • the attitude of the applicant to scientific work (how responsibly and conscientiously he approached the writing of the project, whether he deviated from the planned plan, etc.),

  • what literature did you use (what works underlie the study, are they reliable, how are the references / footnotes / bibliography, etc.),

  • whether the work meets the requirements of the Higher Attestation Commission.

At the end of the document, there should be a conclusion containing an objective and accurate assessment of the dissertation: how the compiler (expert) assessed it, what advantages and disadvantages he revealed, whether or not he recommends awarding a dissertation degree. The review is certified by the signature of the originator and the wet seal of the organization (in which he works).
